Bringing the Joy of Music to Downtown Nevada: Meet 88 Keys Studio

A new sound is filling downtown Nevada, and it's coming from the keys of a piano.

88 Keys Studio recently celebrated its grand opening at 215 W. Walnut Street, bringing music education and performance opportunities to the heart of the community. Owner and instructor Heather Walker is no stranger to teaching piano, having spent years helping students discover their love of music.

Walker began playing piano at the age of seven and started teaching under the guidance of her own instructor when she was just fourteen years old.

"I've been teaching ever since," Walker said. "I attended Missouri State University and earned my Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in piano performance."

While classically trained, Walker enjoys teaching a variety of musical styles and has built a program focused on helping students develop both skills and confidence.

Prior to opening 88 Keys Studio, Walker taught lessons from her home. Moving to a downtown storefront was a natural next step.

"I really liked the window front, and the rent and location were reasonable," she said. "I had been teaching out of my home, so being more in town is nice."

The studio offers one-on-one piano lessons for students ages six and older, with younger students considered on an individual basis. Beyond weekly lessons, students have opportunities to participate in piano competitions, attend monthly group classes—affectionately known as "piano parties" by one student—and perform in two annual recitals.

For Walker, the goal extends beyond simply teaching students how to play piano.

"I hope I can help my students find their own love of music," she said. "Not every student stays with piano forever, but it is a wonderful foundation into so many different instruments and voice."

As 88 Keys Studio becomes part of the downtown business community, Walker is excited about the positive impact music can have on people's lives.

"With all the craziness of today and technology, sometimes bringing it back to the basics of music can change a life and lift the spirit," she said.

When asked about her favorite part of teaching, Walker didn't hesitate.

"My favorite part of teaching is the 'aha' moment," she said. "Sometimes I get to witness it, but sometimes it happens during their own practice time. The joy and excitement of tackling a concept or song just makes my heart smile."

Nevada Main Street Alliance welcomes 88 Keys Studio to downtown Nevada and looks forward to seeing students grow, perform, and share their love of music for years to come.
