A Splash of Patriotism: The Laurels Bring Art and Heart to Downtown
Downtown Nevada has a new burst of color and community pride, thanks to The Laurels and their inspiring patriotic mural project located on the 100 block of E. Walnut. What began as a spark of an idea quickly grew into a collaboration of creative minds and helping hands — each contributing their time, talent, and enthusiasm to create something meaningful for the heart of our town.
As Laurels President Lynnette Foster shared, the group wanted to “do something different and fun to brighten our community.” The idea grew as members gathered to brainstorm ways they could contribute to the ongoing downtown revitalization. With support from local business owner Bill Foster, who offered his wall and sponsored the supplies, the vision began to take shape under the artistic direction of Jeanette Hawkins, whose talent helped bring the mural to life.
The project was filled with laughter, teamwork, and a shared sense of purpose. “The project created a sense of comradery among those involved,” said Shirley Johnson, who also contributed creative ideas to the mural’s design.
That sense of connection resonated with everyone who joined in. Linda Schowengerdt said her favorite part was “working together with friends” — and of course, taking a well-earned ice cream break at Pint Sized Ice Cream Shop across the street.
Beyond the artwork itself, the mural has become a symbol of what community collaboration can achieve. “Public art makes people notice what’s around them and starts conversations,” Linda reflected. “Hopefully others will be inspired to clean up or decorate what they own or rent.”
Caroline Taylor echoed that spirit, saying, “Main Street Alliance is working hard to improve downtown.” She added that she loves driving through towns filled with murals and sculptures because “it just makes the towns more appealing.” For her, being part of the project was “fun — and a great way to come together as a group and make a difference.”
The mural stands as both a patriotic tribute and a reminder of what happens when creativity, community, and heart come together — one brushstroke at a time.
