A piece of Nevada's railroad history has been brought back to life, thanks to the generosity, hard work, and dedication of our community!

On Monday, October 26, the Nevada Main Street Alliance hosted Cookies & Cocoa at the Caboose at Earp Park, celebrating the restoration of the historic caboose and the unveiling of a new historical marker.

Organized by the Nevada Main Street Alliance Design Committee, the restoration project brought together local businesses, organizations, and community members with a shared goal of preserving an important piece of Nevada's railroad heritage.

A Restoration Made Possible by Community Support

The caboose received a much-needed transformation thanks to the incredible generosity of JR Watts and Capitol Construction, who donated their time, talent, and resources to prepare and repaint the historic landmark.

Their hard work, along with the addition of historically appropriate railroad decals, helped bring new life and authenticity to the caboose.

The project was also supported by a matching grant from the Nevada/Vernon County Community Foundation, along with generous contributions from numerous community donors.

During the celebration, donors were invited to gather for a special group photo, recognizing the individuals and organizations whose support helped make the restoration possible.

Celebrating Nevada's Railroad Heritage

The evening included a special presentation by Kevin Love, President of the Missouri Pacific Historical Society, who shared railroad history and helped connect the restoration project to the area's rich railroad heritage.

Kevin also played an important role during the restoration process, providing historical guidance on the appropriate decals and their placement to help maintain the caboose's authenticity.

A highlight of the evening was the unveiling of a new historical marker created by Brophy Monument, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn more about the caboose and its place in Nevada's history.

Families and community members also enjoyed cookies and cocoa, along with train rides provided by the Walker Community Betterment Association, making the evening a celebration for all ages.

More Than Just a Restoration

The caboose restoration represents more than a fresh coat of paint. It reflects what can happen when a community comes together to preserve its history and invest in the places that make Nevada special.

The Nevada Main Street Alliance extends its sincere appreciation to JR Watts and Capitol Construction, the Nevada/Vernon County Community Foundation, Kevin Love, Brophy Monument, the Walker Community Betterment Association, and the many donors, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to this project and celebration.

Because of their efforts, this piece of Nevada's railroad heritage will continue to be enjoyed and appreciated by residents and visitors for years to come.

The next time you're at Earp Park, located at 304 W. Austin Blvd. in Nevada, MO, take a moment to visit the restored caboose, read its new historical marker, and appreciate the community effort that brought this landmark back to life.
