Flowers on the Square: A Main Street Project in Bloom

Last Updated 6/2/2026Posted in News

Visitors to downtown Nevada may have noticed a colorful new addition to the square just in time for the busy summer season. The Nevada Main Street Alliance Design Committee recently completed its Flowers on the Square project, bringing vibrant color, greenery, and a renewed sense of community pride to the heart of downtown.

According to Nevada Main Street Alliance President and Design Committee Chair Diane Knoche, the project was selected as one of the committee's primary initiatives for 2026.

"Our Design Committee chose this as a primary project for 2026, and we planned to have the flowers in place before Bushwhacker Days," Knoche said. "That's a big event for Nevada, and we know there'll be a lot of people on the square. We hope they enjoy the addition."

For Knoche, the project represents more than simply beautifying downtown. It is also about creating momentum and encouraging others to become involved in the continued revitalization of the community.

"It takes just a little forward movement to get others to join in," she explained. "The positive effect of seeing progress helps others want to join in."

Like many Main Street initiatives, Flowers on the Square began with an idea that evolved through planning and collaboration. Once the Main Street Board approved the project concept, the Design Committee developed a detailed project plan outlining responsibilities, timelines, and budget considerations.

The project came together through the efforts of dedicated Design Committee members and volunteers who gathered to assemble the displays, combining flowers, trees, soil, and decorative elements that now brighten the square for residents and visitors alike.

One of the most meaningful additions came late in the planning process when the committee decided to incorporate painted rocks into the tree planters. Donated rocks were transformed into colorful works of art by local middle school students, adding a unique community touch to the project.

"I hear they are eager to walk the square, each looking for their own hand-painted rock," Knoche shared. "It just makes you feel happy."

The collaboration between Main Street volunteers, donors, and local students perfectly reflects the spirit behind the project—bringing people together to make downtown Nevada an even more welcoming place.

As the community enjoys the colorful displays throughout the season, Knoche hopes the reaction is simple.

"My personal hope is that people just think, 'Wow, that looks so nice.'"

The Nevada Main Street Alliance would like to thank the Design Committee, community volunteers, donors, and student artists who helped make Flowers on the Square possible. Their creativity, generosity, and hard work continue to make downtown Nevada a vibrant destination and a source of pride for the entire community.
