Emergency Medical Services (EMS), also known as ambulance services or paramedic services, are emergency services which treat illnesses and injuries that require an urgent medical response, providing out-of-hospital treatment and transport to definitive care.  EMS providers encounter a wide variety of patients in life threatening situations, from car accidents, to drownings, to incidents of cardiac arrest, stroke, overdose, trauma and mass casualty incidents.  Vernon County Ambulance District currently employs 2 crews at all times to cover the city and county needs, with an additional third truck covering during daytime hours. 

Vernon County currently encompasses 837 square miles of ground and a population of 20,437.  Cities in Missouri covered within the coverage area include:  Nevada, Bronaugh, Schell City, Moundville, Sheldon, Milo, Walker, Metz, Deerfield, Stotesbury, Richards and Harwood.

History


Founded in 1978

June 6, 1978 the creation of Vernon County Ambulance District was approved by voters, and the first Board of Directors was elected August 8, 1978.  VCAD was a BLS service at this time. 

NOVEMBER 1, 1978, Leased Finis Moss Building moving from County Jail.  2 ambulances were leased from Vernon County for $100.00/year; 1 of these purchased from Vernon County June 1979 for $475.00. 

The district has continued to grow, now owning 7 ambulances and providing ALS service 24/7/365.
